It's kind of a bummer. The main character has been in unrequited love with some (weird and increasingly controlling) classmate from college for years. He continues to dwell on that for the majority of the story. At the same time, it's realistic in a very optimistic way, everybody moves on and becomes happier after struggling for a while.
