00ac's manga / #Panic disorder(1)

Kimi no Tonari de Yurarete

Complete | Niyama | 2019 released

I really am a fan of this work, and often revisit it to reread it. I like how the main lead's panic disorder was shown and treated with the appropriately amount of severity- a lot of manga alleviates people's conditions or write them off entirely, and this work doesn't do that. It shows the shaking, the walls closing in, the hyper focusing on worries/anxieties. The fact the main lead had a fear of being abandoned- he had previously close himself off and dealt with his condition alone, but opening up made him realize how much outside support could help. He saw the progress in his social life and losing that social support and stability scared him, which is a real thing to relate to. People don't want to lose their friends or circle, and it only humanized the main lead's condition even more. For that, it's already highly rated in my book. Next, moving into the issue with the character I think is named Shigawa? Well, the character that is outwardly homophobic towards the main character at work, going as far as to ostracize him, despite being gay himself. This is something that happens! People who are repressed can work to make inclusive spaces, exclusionary in their attempts to 'prove something'. Through Shigawa's poor treatment of the MC (which was attributed to unrequited love), a classic case of repressed feelings and projection is shown, where he, like others, insult and put into others what they subconsciously think about themselves. Lastly, the romance is not hurried at all but developed at pace that just feels right. I know I'm raving like a lunatic, but I can appreciate the sincerity behind this story, and the attention and awareness brought to certain topics. And I am a fan of how the MC catered to the ML. Boundaries were respected! Trigger warning: homophobic slurs are used in this!
