The duchess Eleanor is informed by Crown Prince Leandre that her engagement has been broken off, with this fact having been exposed to the eyes of high society. In order to heal her broken heart, she heads to a summer retreat, and there she meets Prince Clovis, who has abdicated his position as crown prince in order to avoid political strife.
