Does Yaoi romanticize toxic relationships?
Ever since quarantined started, i've been reading a lot of manga on here, and it's kinda made me realize something. Mayyyybe I'm speaking really broadly here, but in the most yaois i've come across, the sub is almost always saying 'no, stop, slow down' while the dom is always just not...listening?????? Like everything is just borderline non-con, with most being dub-con at best. I really wish there'd be more tags and warnings for these type of things.
Is this true for straight manga too? But like most of the straight (nsfw-related) manga I've seen have shown both the women and man 100% consenting.
And I knowwwwww 'they're fictional characters, they're not real' but it STILL would be nice if yaoi/other creators put warnings in their stories.
I actually researched BL with a friend so I can tell you that it's not true... BL as a genre (like most of the industry) portrays "problematic" scenes but straight and lesbian potrayals have more of them; I did the math! Abuse, harassment, underage and coercive relationships are more present in magical girl/shojo (and some shounen) than in PG to 12...... 1 reply
Well u r wrong in not one but many ways: 1. This is not just the case with yaoi. Yaoi actually got this idea outta straight mangas.
2. No one romanticizes anything. May it be forceful scenes or assault scenes they r used, rather sometimes very effectively, as plot devices as well as to depict the personality of characters. If u read a "rape" fo...... 1 reply
you're right, a lot of yaoi manga is dubious consent at best, especially a lot of the older/well-known/pretty bishounen ikemen types that revolve around a power-dynamic where one party more-or-less holds all the power either financially, emotionally, or physically and the other just passively becomes their "property" for lack of a better descriptor...... 1 reply
