But if you think about it, if you ever go to Japan and only know how to speak the language and can’t read in it that well, you could always just ask a local what a sign says or something.
I’ve been learning Japanese in school, and if your main goal is watching anime and not fully relying on subtitles, one of the most important things is definitely understanding spoken sentence structure, learning subject particles, and verbs, rather than just learning random nouns. Once you understand what sentences, some subject particles, and some verbs sound like, watching anime and other Japanese shows with subtitles can actually help you learn nouns and other words in Japanese. I would not suggest having understanding anime completely without subtitles as your main goal, since the subtitles can actually help you learn and act as a self check of “hey I understood what that character/person said correctly!”
