Kinda controversial
I’m sorry if this comes across as rude or mean that is not my intention but am I the only one who finds it weird when *straight* women refer to bl characters as “top and bottom” or “uke and seme” in bls without smvt (aka “shounen ai”) I don’t really understand why they are making something sexual when it doesn’t need to be. I mean if the story implied that they had seggs and stuff then I don’t think that’s that bad but for something like Salad Days or Who Can Define Popularity I think that that is just weird. Like just refer to them by their name or if you don’t know their name just say “mc (main character)” or “ml (male lead)” or “love interest”. Idk I just get a weird vibe when people do that. Especially when straight women do it for the bl they’re reading. I might be the only one who thinks this though idk. AGAIN IM SORRY IF THIS SOUND RUDE
Not only straight women, people need to stop saying that in general, it encourages stereotypes, since irl there’s usually no “top” or “bottom” one of the partners may prefer to be in a certain position in bed but that doesn’t give anybody the right to label them as that. It’s also very heteronormative so like just stop 1 reply
i completely agree. as a gay guy, i think its great that straight women can appreciate bls and shonen ai. but its uncomfortable if they focus primarily on the sexual aspects of a community (mlm or nblm) that they are not a part of, especially if the story wasn't even sexual in the first place reply
This ties into the cishet trying to make the LGBTQ+ straight. I know a bunch of cases where Str8 ppl have asked gay men who the woman in the relationship was. Like wtf? And then as someone who physically identifies as a woman (unfortunately), I got asked who was the man in the relationship when I was dating my gf. Like excuse you sir, there is no m...... reply
It is kind of weird when people do that. There are so many other ways to refer to characters like shortened real name, intials, obvious feature/personality trait, MC/ML etc. But when they do the "seme/uke" thing (even in 18+ BL), it just feels like they don't care about the character. I can understand when it's there on smutty oneshot stories or ev...... reply
the word "uke" and "seme" always rubbed me the wrong way,,, even if i couldn't remember their names (because of course i would) i wouldn't use those words reply
