i dont think its a very good habit but im definitely guilty of judging a book by its cover. I mean you could be missing out on the most heartfelt story of all time but you overlooked it because the characters were drawn poorly. but alas, quality in both aspects is always preferred ;P reply
I judge the cover but not entirely
I check the discription first if it intrigues me I check the labels
it has to be yaoi and if "tragedy tag" is there I won't read it
then I go to comments to be sure that it has a happy ending although its not like everybody writes "yay happy ending" but thats what I most look for

I don't juge by cover or description. Since i do sumarries and cover arts/posters. So i get the idioticy behind the beast of it e.e ... what i do judge is by first 5-10 pages. If im not into it by then ill hardly be into it by later. The art/story/sex/anything ha to grab my attention or im on to the next one reply
Occasionally I'll judge, but I tend to find that the ones that look or sound terrible are actually the ones that are fabulous! And vice versa.
Though sometimes I will admit that what you see is what you get... Which is not always good...
In general, though, I've probably read everything I thought wouldn't be any good at some point.

Lol alright... Usually, if I saw an old man, a scary or an ugly looking character on the cover of a yaoi, I'd immediately click and read it. I know it sounds really weird to some (or even many) people, I understand. On the contrary, I usually avoid Manga with a really girly, kind of like girl-with-a dick looking character. In all honesty, yes pretty often!!!
For me, good art + good description and feedback +good feeling about the manga= very good manga; mostly this applies
When I read the not so good art ones: I will for someone to recommend it to me and just find the comments entertaining reply
