I think appreciating the art for what it is but not respecting the artist is fine. Even if they’re assholes, they’re talented assholes and the art/music resonates with many. If I like the song, then I like the song. I don’t even know the artist 90% of the time reply
Generally, I don't separate an artist from their work because what they do does influence how I view their work. But, in the case of Dear Benjamin, I have always felt it is so unfair that the story's author got punished along with the scummy artist.
