Behaviours of Characters/People with Psychological Problems
I was reading another manga from an author I like and as always I like to check the comments right after I finish it. And there’s one particular thing I find interesting about the comments on this author’s mangas; There’s always a comment that says something like: “I’ve read many twisted and fucked up manga but I always fail to understand the thought process, behaviours or the motivations behind this author’s characters.” And then some thoughts struck me: What exactly is the behaviour of a person with psychological issues/disorders? Is it really much different from a normal person? Does a mentally ill person need to have certain motivations behind their actions? What type of characteristics in a mentally ill person do you usually see when you read a manga/manhwa/manhua? Is it hard to understand a mentally ill person?
I examined these questions and racked my brains to try and figure out what the difference could possibly be between this author’s characters and what you usually see. Could it be that this author had grasped the true form of these behaviours that the other authors just had a misconception of? Or is this author the one with the misconceptions? Maybe people aren’t used to seeing the type of characters that this author writes, hence they don’t understand them?
To get an answer to the last three questions I thought I needed to understand the former few but if you have any other ideas to answer them then please do share, however little it may be. ლ(´ڡ`ლ)
You raised some excellent questions. I'm not a certified expert/professional on this topic but just like the author, I like texts that examine the extremities of sanity and the lack thereof.
I'd like to preface this by saying that psychology is a young science and still evolving with time. So my insights are just insights, they're not facts and s...... 4 reply
ill leave my input on this as a psychology student but ill try to keep it very short- it depends.
sometimes, depictions of mental illness are purely the biased opinion of the author (even if they research, its still an opinion on how the illness looks). other times, its based partially on reality or based fully on the reality of the author (i.e. a...... 2 reply
Honestly i get your question and i thought of the same thing, i personally think most authors have battled with depression or self worth issues, few may have bigger mental health concerns, but they only see the issues from one perspective, that is why it can be hard to explain mental illness as a "normal person" will experience a lot of symptoms o...... 1 reply
Trying to rationalize the irrational is going into the realm of dialectics and metaphysics. When we try to understand emotions, especially those who we categorize as mentally ill, we have this idea that their actions appear in a linear fashion from their emotions. You’re sad so you cry, your angry so you pout, etc. that’s a fundamental misunder...... 1 reply
the only difference between "normal" and people with mental issues are being exaggerated/odd movements and thinking. people have this concept of what is "normal" and not, and I think their concept is so fucked up.
"what exactly is the behaviour of a person with psychological issues/disorders?" there's a lot actually, you'll notice it in their bod...... 1 reply
