I'm not answering for myself, but answering from a second-hand perspective. One of my friends actually LEARNED a lot of her English because she read translated boys love manga so often. It was genuinely impressive. She also reads a lot of slash/fan fiction stuff and even writes her own fan fiction in English despite it not being her first language....... 2 reply
Mine actually got worse lmao
I learned English in the beginning of elementary school from video games (especially Minecraft and Roblox) and was fluent by grade 3-5 and started reading literature in English
Ever since I started reading manga I can feel my English deteriorating reply
I'm already kinda fluent in English but I genuinely did learn a lot of vocab from reading bl. Like I wouldn't have any idea what "titillating" means if I hadn't read A Man Of Virtue 2 reply
Well to be exact I didn't learn English by reading manga/mahnwa. When I was a child my father would watch English movies.. and me and my siblings would tag along to watch, ever since then I have become to understand English and I also can read it since school teaches English in elementary. My mother teaches me English
Vocabulary words when I haven...... reply

i never needed it but i did make one of my friends read bl in english with me lmaoo she wanted to get better at english and liked bl, so i helped her read whenever we had the time. other than that i occasionally learn obscure words like "hew" like wtf how is that a word?? reply
My english did got better when I started reading mangas in the language (it wasn't on this page though), but that was a "side product" and not the main intention. The main intention was to find faster translations reply
