I have a one sided beef with mythology retellings
Circe, the song of Achilles, Ennead and even fucking Percy Jackson. I CAN'T TAKE THE MISINFORMATION ANYMORE, the fans of these are some of the most uneducated and insufferable people to be around, LIKE NO ACHILLES WAS NOT A GOOD PERSON he's not a poor lil gay boy who lost his lover and Patroclus was not a twink who couldn't fight, he was one of the best warriors...he deserved to die, Hector of Troy was the victim, the troyans were the victims. Ennead is a orientalist dumpster fire that whitewashes half of the gods and specifically makes the "beautiful" god's light skinned.
regarding ennead...in mythology the gods are depicted as gold or green or whatever, like they didnt even have real skin color, so what white washing?
and the most beautiful god in ennead is ra and idgaf.
i dont see how it comes off as orientalist ether when its just verrry loosely based on mythology stories, not real Egyptian history, society or cu...... 3 reply
I AM THE SAME. I'm greek so it feels like an insult to my heritage every time somebody disregards the actual mythology. Of course it's myth and writing fiction based on it is ok, but acting as if Achilles was a cute gay boy instead of an asshole and rapist like most greek men of the era pisses me off reply
As someone who's Greekmytho is his special interest (it's an autism thing) I refuse to read retellings.
I also hate it whenever I talk about Greekmytho and ppl say like "yeah I've read Percy Jackson"
Like, HOLY SHIT STFU HOW IS THAT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM RELATED???
I hate inaccuracies and these media makes ppl think that that's the actual myth ...... reply
To be fair, any mythology that is retold is bound to deviate, the only difference is the scale. Look at journey to the west. You have some pretty accurate 1-to-1 adaptations, then you have something like dragon ball. One of my fave manhuas has a gay pixiu and a tech-CEO emperor fengdu. ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
It's not exclusive to fictional works too....... reply
