OG fujos - how did bl change over the years?
Im fairly new to bl (i started reading last year december) since my friend wanted to show me some stories and see if I’d like them. I asked her how long had she’d been into bl and said since she was in grade school. crazy i know.
im only asking this question on mangago since i want to hear about what bl used to be like and how it possibly changed over the past years especially since the pandemic.
How has bl changed and how has it stayed the same?
Wooooh boy I could write a full length research paper on this, but I'll try to keep it brief lol. I'm probably gonna be super blunt too. I would not call myself a fujo anymore (def still was a few years ago), but I still enjoy reading BL.
Changes:
-There's more consensual sex. Sounds insane, I know, but 10-15 years ago it was wayyyyyy worse. I wo...... 2 reply
I've been into yaoi for 20+ years, so I feel like I know what i'm talking about. This is probably not a popular opinion among the current wave of yaoi fans post-covid, but once you've been around for as long as I have you see how the trends shift, and this is the first time I've seen this level of hate and aggression in yaoi and fandom circles towa...... 6 reply
We're now getting more buff bottoms compared to back then when our options were only a twink man who's 4'11 or same height. Its amazing really but at the same time they make these buff men be stupid af. reply
An og fujo would've surely abandoned the title, but yeah, as a former reader, I'd say there's much less pedo stuff but unpopular opinion, the rape still consistent honestly. Because if my memory serves me correctly so much rape stuff was popping off tbf. reply
I'd say main difference is art and source.
Back in the day most bl, usually called yaoi, were mostly mangas. Because of that shotas were way more common than now. The rapey plots were just as common though. For some reason we still haven't evolved from such "plots".
The art wasn't all that important. Which is how the whole "yaoi hands" and other ...... 2 reply
Been reading since the popularity of Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, Junjou Romantica soared the BL spaces.
Pros:
1. Much more BL content compared to the previous years. Before It was almost Japanese BL and most mature rated BL (sekaiichi Hatsukoi, Junjou Romantic, Gravitation, Super Lovers, Hybrid Child, Love in the Viewfinder) had questionable themes with ...... 1 reply
I’m not og og, but I’ve been reading since idk, my kid was 8 when I found yaoi manga, & she’s 21 now, so over 12 yrs. I have read some older mangas too from like the 00’s (& back then except for an occasional Korean comic, it was all manga) & it’s a lot of the same tropes, but more intense. Lots more non con. But you have to understand fo...... 3 reply
As someone that’s used this site on and off for a good while, I will say the most interesting thing was seeing how the Hallyu wave even affected the BL scene. I remember early to mid 2010’s this site was 99% Japanese manga, with the only semi popular Korean work at that time being “Totally Captivated.” I remember I stopped reading BL and co...... 1 reply
