If someone is hurting themselves with their choices, should they be forced into following rules?
For my AP Lit class we read this book called "A Clockwork Orange" (aparantly it's the most banned book in the U.S.). One of the main themes of the book was 'free will'. According to the author, to have free will means to let someone choose both, good and the bad for themselves by their own judgement. No one is absolute good or absolute bad. And nor can one force someone into those roles. Forcing someone into being good is a violation of free will (according to the book). And from my life experience, i wonder if i'll be giving up my free will if instead of bed rotting, sleeping the whole fucking day and starving, i follow whatever my mom says, get up, shower, eat, socialize, do work, pray to her God and all the stuff.
If you eliminate bad choices you eliminate many people’s incentive for good choices. A lot of people need a bad example to drive against becoming. Comparison and cross examination of each other is a huge social trait of humans. And when people know what bad choices are firsthand they can help people to change more than people that don’t unders...... 1 reply
Well, unless you’re a kid, you can’t really be ‘forced’ into doing anything. A part of free will is being able to choose both. However, I believe that there is a limit on “free will” when we are kids because that is when we’re supposed to be taught the “right” from “wrong” that you mentioned earlier (the bed-rotting vs shower ...... reply
If you follow everything your mom says to do, you're making a choice.
And just from the way you're writing, you don't seem all too jazzed about the choices you're making for yourself.
Free will isn't all about doing only the things you want, frankly, that wouldn't be free will, that would be addictive dependence. People use free will to try drugs ...... reply
If she forces u ig that's a violation of free will according to that book, but if u choose to follow it even if u don't want to, that's your free will. But irl, ig ppl are forced into following rules if they're hurting themselves. Like ppl who do self harm or attempted suicide, others would stop them from doing that again reply
