I’ve found that many authors go about writing morally corrupt Seme characters in a very fucked up way. To show their evilness, they portray their characters as rapists/ sexual predators. It is a very in your face approach, because there is no justification; it is a selfish act that debilitates the victims life. The author, however, tries to make the reader sympathize with the evil by giving them a sad backstory. Either he was hit as a child or he was always a psychopath and grew isolated because of it. These behaviours are effects of the lack of nurturing growing up, they tell us. Later on, no matter the circumstances, the Seme “changes” for the Uke and becomes a “green flag.” Readers start to root for him and disregard his past crimes because the Uke doesn’t outwardly despise him for it afterwards. Does that make it okay, though? Is it truly a healthy relationship if it’s between a victim and aggressor? Spoiler alert, no. It will never be. Its resignation. Coercion is not consent. Even if the character decides to stop the abuse, it will never erase it. It is very disgusting and I cannot stand it. When I see media like that on the top charts, it pisses me off because why are we normalizing it and rooting for them?
