how does the mail function work

i‘ve been on mangago since a few years now, but i‘ve never used the mail function tho. is it like emails? is it a dm?
i‘m so scared, how does it work - i also don‘t want to randomly write people and annoy them ahhhhh
my curiosity is killing me, help
