so i recently got into sketching and never in my life have ever sketch cuz i thought i was blessed with two left hands with a tremor.
anyways so i sketched this by copying a sketch from Pinterest and i want to sketch some more so i was thinking of buying a blank sketch notebook to sketch but i think these lined notebooks help me sketch better so should i continue on lined sketch books or buy a blank one?? im worried cuz maybe i might get used to with having these lines as guide when im sketching and would not be able to sketch on blank paper in future if i ever wanna transition.
I agree with using both, especially in the early stages. In fact, if you draw something using the lined paper and then draw the same thing on a blank sheet, you might even be able to internalise the lines and shapes even better than just having used the one. This is, however, only the case for directly copying images based off what you see and will not help you learn the forms of objects. Still, it’s a great starting place, and you’ll be better off if you can remember to think of the “3D-ness” of the objects you’re drawing as you go. Once you’ve picked up the skill of copying and become more confident in your lines, in order to then draw from the imagination (this doesn’t exclude using reference), you’ll want to start getting used to the blank paper eventually.
TLDR; Use blank paper to get used to drawing lines and shape while copying images, then swap to blank and eventually start learning form in order to then draw from the imagination.
Hello! I don’t have like a super specific style and tbh I still have to improve (we always have) but I totally recommend to use either blank pages or dots pages. I mean you can totally use these types of notebooks, but for studies and more serious drawings I would say the other ones. The reason being the lines actually sometimes get in the way in you actually interiorizing the shapes . (This is just my experience tho! Maybe you won’t like my style and that’s totally legit! Mi insta is zeiya_Nemi and I’m currently doing a webtoon called Red Riding Wolf. I would say drawing one character again and again helps me define my style. I started in a lined notebook too btw!)
yupp thats why im thinking of keeping both so that i can use one for practicing an other to explore!! also i checked out ur webtoon, ur art is BEAUTIFUL!!! i love the colour scheme of ur webtoon <33
When I was younger I used the lined to help me out with proportions since I used references from the mangas I was reading. It can be really helpful in the beginning. It helped me branch out into face proportions later on. And dont be too worried about hand tremmors, I have pretty bad ones. It can only really be rough when you branch into lining with pens (specifically fine lines). You've got a really good start! Keep up the good work!
yess lines help a lot with proportions when using references. lining w pen will literally be so stressful tho so im thinking of just sticking with keeping it as a sketch cuz ik for sure that im gonna ruin it. also thanks for the compliment, ur so sweet >.<
