Should I quit band?

cd05 cd05 2026-06-23 02:14:09 About question
I was always in a high chair placement and I have many friends in my section, I can name only 1-2 friends of mine that aren't in band, and even less that I met outside of band. I always wanted to be the section leader and I waited patiently for my turn to become one, because until recently, it was chosen by overall chair rank and since I'm going to become a junior and the only senior in our section is a drum major, I thought I was as good as chosen because I was first chair. Apparently, my band director decided a new method at deciding section leaders and he chose the mature, leader-like people instead of the people with more experience/skill. So, now my whole reason for being in band has been blown over my head and i'm stuck purposeless, how am I supposed to enjoy something that was my only skill that I had worked hard on for years just for my dream to be crushed? My purpose is gone, not just in band but in life, it was the only thing I was working towards but it's over now. What should I do?

Second chair alto saxophone veteran over here, shouldn’t your reason for being in band be loving music/playing your instrument???

stay in band and work through those feelings. recommit to the love of music and your instrument. it's great that you had a goal, but failing to meet it isn't the end- it's the beginning. give yourself the chance to be happy just where you are and new things will come to you.

personally, i don't like people who quit just because they don't get what they want, but that's just me.

also, don't you still have senior year to potentially be chosen?
