i am beyond disgusted by what is happening in france. this country is falling apart and no one is doing anything.
a new law has been passed : the police are entitled to the presumption of innocence. they are allowed to shoot people, this isn’t a small issue, it means that the police has the POWER to MURDER innocents and citizens because they were ‘defending themselves’, in a ‘dangerous situation’.
this is revolting. i have never been so angry at the government in my entire life. how could they pass this bill ? how could they???? this is not the US, people don’t fucking carry guns out there, WE CANT EVEN DEFEND OURSELVES FROM THE POLICE NOW !
and i say this as a privileged white cis woman. nothing will happen to me. but i am so incredibly worried for all the immigrants, pocs, and especially for north africans, because the police will not even hesitate to murder them if they have the possibility to do it.

Ok so what I read is this is basically a stand your ground law, the cops now can shoot you and not have to justify it other than "they had this weapon and tried to attack me" which imo should be the only thing anyone has to do cop and civ alike.
well the thing is before the cops had to tell the reason why they shot and murdered someone. now it’s our duty to do that. so for example… if a cop murders an innocent, the family will have to demonstrate that their relative wasn’t dangerous. so in conclusion : it is a permit to kill for cops
Ok I did a little more digging, the cops still have to provide a reasoning they can't just say they did their job. But they no longer have to prove themselves innocent because it's gonna be assumed they are, it's up to the prosecutors to prove them guilty. There's still going to be an automatic investigation and all that jazz, the only thing that's changed is who has the burden of proof. Which imo is in a way how it should be. I think a cop should be able to point and say "weapon the criminal tried to use", and then it get's investigated by a third party. So like I said it is kinda like a stand your ground law that we have here in some states in the US, and tbh I think everyone regardless of their profession should be innocent till proven guilty which is what this law changes for the cops in France. (the only thing I hear about France on the global scale is constant protest and the yearly terror attack so I'm not very educated on the social/political climate)
well tbh i don’t like cops at all, they work with the corrupted government, so it really pisses me off to know that they’re proven innocent until someone else says something.
they rarely ever get judged for their actions, or if they do, they never go to jail for a long time, which i find extremely unfair. the thing is, the far right wing wants the police to have full power over the people. meaning that if you’re not being a « good citizen »…. they can use violence to make you obey.
i don’t believe using violence or making the citizens fear the police will make our society safer and better. it’s the complete opposite. right now, the far right doesn’t have power. but next year, there would be presidential elections, and if they win, i can assure you that it will be complete chaos. they want to install fear in the country so people obey and don’t say anything, basically, a dictatorship.
anyway, my point is that cops should never be able to murder someone no matter the situation. police brutality is very common here, especially against pocs. passing this bill means that pocs WILL get murdered even more often. cops are racist and won’t hesitate to use violence now.

From what I understood from this law is the cops are innocent till proven guilty, I honestly don't understand the problem with it. I understand there's bad actors but why should someone be guilty until proven innocent, that's not how it's supposed to work.
