QUESTION FOR GRAPHIC DESIGNERS

Hikyo Hikyo 2026-08-16 09:37:54 About crying
okay so I'm thinking of applying a job to be a designer, I don't know what kind of portfolio they may be looking? Like what type of art? Like I've done multiple art contest and won them. Its my first time applying for this kind of position, as I've only done posters for journalism but that's cartooning.

it depends on what the job is or the place is asking you to do. Basically it's how you apply the skills you have that can fit the position. Showcase related projects/mockups (doesn't have to be real world projects) that could fit the company or job needs based on what skills you have. You said you've designed posters and won art contests, so you have some graphic and illustration skills. If it's an agency, showcasing specific projects like a brandbook, advertising materials for a marketing/ad campaign, merchandise design or social media digital materials (content for ig/fb/other socmed like reels, story, posts) might be good. A publishing company maybe book cover designs (illustration), layout designs (like magazine mockups), or publishing materials/prints (maybe you designed or made a physical calendar/journal design).

These days creatives are multi-skilled and are annoyingly demanded to know a bit of everything....If its a local or small place just be prepared to handle things outside of your skills or scope...like the other comment said you might hand video editing, social media content, photography, web design etc. Hence i suggest in your portfolio to just put what areas you excel in.

If you're going for those with marketing then yeah, its best to showcase digital content for social media on your portfolio (poster, banner, story, reels, posts etc), or make a mockup project for a marketing/ad campaign. If you're not sure how or have no idea, go to Behance.net to get inspiration, lots of people upload portfolios and graphic design projects. Honestly if going for the ones related to marketing it'll come in handy to tap into a little of everything like video editing, branding, photog or web design coz it's demanding and they want more versatile skills

ALSO, this might all be overwhelming if you're just beginning, sorry. If all this is unfamiliar just start with learning different promotional channels and media assets for marketing or advertising ( print or digital: social media content types, posters, flyers, brochures, banners/billboards, email blast, newsletters, etc.). Familiarize yourself with well known social media platforms or advertising channels. Learn about branding in general since thats probably the main thing and it will make much more sense.

I was a graphic design intern one time. They made me cover everything design related: infographics, ig carousel & story template, event poster/banner, presentations, heck even webpage design & video bumper (fortunately Ik a bit of coding & mograph). So imo it's nice if u include the range of things u do in ur portfolio.

Always keep honing your skills and tailor portfolio to the job showing the best work and the flexibility / adaptability, art contests are not A MEASURE OF SKILL IN MY OPINION

But congrats for winning

There is many types of graphic designers so a cartoon based one won't hurt. Linkedin posting that you are looking for a certain position showcasing skill BUT NEVER DO FREE DEMOS OR UNDER VALUE YOURSELF
