I used to be so scared of zombies when i was a kid.

When I was in second grade, a boy in my class put on the Michael Jackson "Thriller" music video and it traumatised me for years.
I love horror movies, but could never watch anything even hinting at zombie like behaviour. I got nightmares of 'Plants Vs Zombies', that's how bad it was at one point.
Then after the pandemic started and I was stuck at home, I had a lot of time to think (which is never good when you're an over-thinker) and my zombie fear got resurrected again like yours did. Not wanting any more nightmares I decided to do exposure therapy. (Baby steps? I hardly even know'er)
I started watching every zombie movie and series I could find and really threw myself into the zombie rabbit hole. (ADHD and hyper focus amiright)
Now I love watching zombie movies (obsessed really) and actively search for them.
I do get some anxiety that bubbles up again from time to time, but I resolve it by watching behind the scenes and bloopers from the movie/series.

Although if a zombie apocalypse were to happen irl, I would immediately and 100% commit suicide.

TL;DR: Saw "Thriller" music video as a kid and got traumatised for years. Began intense exposure therapy after the pandemic and now love zombie movies.
