Nah, those are just guidelines on how to silence and censor any meaningful discussions and valid criticism, especially when the content is about real fucking people, ESPECIALLY when it's concerning children.
Honestly, I don't think AO3 should be taken down. It's a platform for fanfiction, and most of this discourse seems to be coming from tt, which isn't exactly known for nuance. A lot of people calling for bans want anything involving sexual assault, grooming, or other taboo subject matter removed outright, without acknowledging that it's not always romanticized, sometimes it's used to portray real experiences.
That said, content depicting genocide or school shootings in a way that reads as entertainment is genuinely disgusting and should be taken down. Fic about real people shouldn't exist either.
But here's what I don't get, why do people go looking for the worst of this stuff, read it, and then post about it, including the title? Naming it just makes it easier for people with bad intentions to find. If something is that disturbing, why seek it out at all? I don't buy "don't like, don't read" as a defense here, that saying was never meant to cover material like this. Being curious doesn't make it okay to read content depicting child sexual abuse.
And sending that content to victims families is its own kind of cruelty. Honestly, both sides are behaving badly here.
Also, the people on tiktok driving this discourse are genuinely frustrating because they don't even use the right terminology, it's not "CP," it's CSAM. They'll compare pedophilia and rape as if they're interchangeable without doing basic research first, and if you try to correct or educate them, they turn around and accuse you of being a pedophile. And not everything gets flagged fairly, I've seen people dragging a fic about a csa survivor processing their trauma and trying to heal, like it's the same thing. Come on, guys.
