I agree; depiction truly sets the tone for how the author wants the topic to be viewed and processed, so when SA is used only as a plot device with no depth or real purpose/impact, especially with how repetitive the theme of SA in BL seems to be, I cannot help but fear that it will just desensitize people to the true gravity of it.
