I'm 27; I'm from the United States and work at a library. I didn't get into anime and manga until college, so I'm a fairly new fan--about seven years. I have only been reading yaoi for about three years, but I love it. My first BL was "Only the Ring Finger Knows." I still have a massive soft spot for that one. :)   2 reply

I vaguely remember watching Shaman King and Digimon as Saturday morning cartoons. I loved them, but didn't know that they were anime. My first anime (that I knew was an anime) was Fruits Basket. It hooked me and I went looking for more. I'm really not sure on my first manga. I read a few chapters of Skip Beat! online before I really got into manga......   reply

It is a bit of an older term. Pen pals are basically long distance friends. Two people who might not know each other (or know each other and one moved away), would write letters back and forth.
