I don't think there's anything wrong with answering truthfully. Maybe they were homophobic, then that's their problem and not yours! That being said though. The 'Green flower/groene bloem' trilogy by Floortje Zwigtman! Those books- about a gay boy in 1890s London, are fantastic. Sadly they only exist in Dutch, German and I think Norwegian or something.
