that back story with chang. this is my cliche theory on it.
ed and chang were pretty close and chang cared about him a lot. but chang was a target of bad people so they decided to target ed, whom he was closest to. as a result, ed lost his dream and chang felt guilty. so he decided to punish himself by giving out the loan (to permanently tie ed to him) and making ed hate him.

I though the exact same thing ! Obviously Chang has feelings for Ed I don’t know if it’s friendship brotherhood or love interest but still he cares ! It means tormenting him by the debt is his way to protect him !
