I kind of disagree with the lack of character development thing so I'll explain my take on this:

JK is clearly struggling internally with alot of pent up emotions. When someone is so stuck in how they act because that's all they've known, it's a huge shock to the system when things start making you question that. Yeah it's pretty obvious he's a giant man sausage but he did several things for Dan that he really didn't have to do. (I.e paying the hospital bills, visiting his grandma, giving him a place to live so he could focus on his job). Now, before anyone comes at me - obviously there was a selfish reason for doing it - so he could have all of Dan's attention on him, but why? Just because he's easy to manipulate? I don't think that's why.

I think, subconsciously, JK is trying to keep Dan around because the poor thing has a huge golden heart and tries his best to see past all the BS. Not just with JK, but just in general. He wants to believe there is good in people. (Very naive but thats one of his most endearing qualities.)

Now, when something as huge as this sweet innocent little lamb acts like you've hung the moon in a completely different way than the rest of the world - wouldn't that throw you off? Like Dan has seen the absolute WORST of JK, but he still believes and him and is still loyal (because he is loyal regardless of feeling indebted to JK, that's just who he is).

JK is a classic, "I hide my emotions and am a giant AHole because I don't know how to regulate myself cuz I'm that awesome" but he's also confused by Dan and confusion sometimes makes people angry. Instead of trying to understand calmly, he gets mad because he hates that he doesn't know something. Thus the constant and continuous bullying of Dan. (Again, not saying it's okay for him to do it.)

But, I wouldn't say Dan is spineless either. He's proven that he would stay loyal to JK (as an employee), that he would care about his well-being (as a friend would), and that he would do anything to try and protect JK.

This conflict regardless of JK's lack of empathy, would make anyone question the person in charge of first aid supplies. Like, how would you react in that situation if you were JK? But you also need to take the culture into account, if a superior admonishes you, it's very rare for people to speak out against it.

Anyway, my adhd made me lose my train of thought but, the just is, I see character development and movement with the plot, but its totally okay if no one else agrees

    I appreciate the perspective!

I too think this perspective is not common, and original

this is exactly what i believe too, a lot of people are developed by their surroundings. if JK doesnt have a bad background im not sure how i will react because man just might be an asshole

Nah, I'm on the boat with you! Scrolling through the comments to see if I could find people with the same train of thought and perspective of the story so far...
