A spinoff of Junjou Romantica, but works just as well on its own. I recommend reading this even if you don't care too much for Junjou Romantica; Nakamura's side stories tend to be better than her main stories.

Ryouichiru is the son of the president of a publishing company with vague dreams of becoming a novelist. Since he can't quite bring himself to write anything, in the interim he is working at his father's publishing house, assisted by Asahina, his childhood friend and personal assistant. He is enamored of Asahina, but Asahina seems to only have eyes for his father. In a pique, the spoiled Ryouichirou declares that he doesn't need Asahina any more.

It is really difficult to rate this objectively. Junjou Romantica (the anime) was my introduction to Japanese BL, and while I recognized even at the time the problems with it and have definitely grown out of this mangaka's works, I admit I have a soft spot for her and can't really separate the lingering feelings from my initial (shameful) enjoyment of the anime from my more informed taste in BL manga.

With these caveats, I think this is fairly good. It's a story that explores the strange way excessive proximity can coexist with a lack of communication, and the dynamic between the spoiled young master and his fussy best friend and secretary is enjoyable and (relatively) realistic. I recommend checking this out if you have a high tolerance for art that is more expressive than skillful and want a lighter story featuring a couple who have known one another for years and yet still don't seem to know one another at all. As an added bonus no rape/dubcon! (which is rare for this author)

what rankles most about nakamura shungiku's work is that i'd like to see her do more with her publishing house setting (one of my favorite settings, by the way) but in the end the whole thing is just subsumed by her couples bickering day in, day out, about acceptable displays of affection or imagined slights or throwing fits of pique or jealousy over the tiniest fucking things. and their dynamics never change. their relationship never settles into anything more steady or trusting. it's just volatile, 100%, all the time. i like the unconventional art style, actually, and i like a lot of the things she's trying to do. but i can never sit through a reading without tearing at my hair at least a little.

Side Story of Junjou Romantica and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi - It's the story of Isaka (Akihiko's editor / Director of Marukawa Shoten) and his Childhood friend Asahina (Isaka's caretaker / secretary).
> The first part chronologically happens before the related series around the time Akihiko was a high-school student about to debut as a writer. Isaka was 22 and Asahina 23. The second part happens after a 10-years time-skip, when they are 32 and 33 and Akihiko is already living with Misaki.
Adapted to anime - Included in junjou romantica anime (S3 ep. 7, OVA 2) and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi anime (S2 ep. 6). And they also appreared here and there along the series, especially Isaka as he's Marukawa's director.

Isaka is secretly in love with his caretaker and former childhood friend Asahina. However, Asahina seems to be obsessed with Isaka's father... or so it seems.
NOTE: This story is tied into Junjou Romantica, involving Akihiko's editor and his secretary
