and are manga and anime the same? or do I have to read from the start?

Rokurouta died! But seriously, the author did an amazing job covering it up and recovering from it by developing the rest of the boys even more in their own stories, so to put it, his death made sense in order to further develop the rest of the characters.

This is the story of Anchan, Joe, Mario, Suppon, Baremoto, Biceps and Cauliflower. They are seven teenagers who, in 1955, have to learn how to live together in the same hold in the reformatory of Shio.
Confined in a hell where suffering and humiliation are daily, they are waiting for a ray of hope in this dark incarcerating world, just like a rainbow which comes out after the rain.
This shit is AMAZING

This manga is so fantastic, so special, sad and hopeful and just the best I've read, the realism of a violent era remembers me to Banana fish (the dumb way Ash and Anchan died is similar too). The art was nice and the characters were so handsome haha. I cried a lot reading this, I was sad for Anchan not living all he wanted but the story wouldn't make sense with him alive so. The abuse, injustice, r*pe, racism, sexism, etc, every bit of realism was magnificent and sad of course but the miracles that happened were appreciated too, the 7 boys were great and the female characters were amazing too, I loved Mario and always wondered what he dreamt for himself but I guess that at thirty something years he still doesn't know and that's cool, I was sad he didn't end with pretty Setsuko after so many things that happened between them and after they met again but hey, he needed to go and heal and she needed to focus on her and her son so I can pretend that they'll surely meet again and be together as they deserve, they are both single too. I'm so happy the boys' dreams became truth and now are happy and some with family. The author made such a great work telling the ladies stories, AHHH I'm just so happy for this story, I love Mario so much and these boys too. Thanks a lot Abe sensei (I think Mario, Cabbage, Soldier and Baremoto would be the same age as him)

A brawl breaks out, and our six prisoners are done rossés by the mysterious young man, thanks to his boxing talent. The story will not only follow the lives of these seven characters surviving in their hellish environment, but also their disillusions due to the rejection by the outside world and by their close relations. This is about the extraodinary and invincible friendships between these young men.

It’s so long but it is so worth it one of my favorite mangas usually reread it once a year it’s brutal and sad at the times but truly amazing

I absolutely love this manga. As I suspected, I would be able to read to at least 70 chapters in less than a day just like I did when I first read this. I love everyone, I love all the characters (except the bad ones haha). I love An-chan, and Mario and all the boys, I hate goodbyes, goodbyes are wonderful and painful a the same time.
That's why when Mario and Setsuoko bid their goodbye. I CRY INSIDE :(((((((((((

Please read this manga, absolutely worth your time!!! Very life-changing!!!!
