I love everything about this manga except the ending.. The more I like Watanuki x Doumeki, the more I dislike the ending. Somehow it just feel sad, lonely.. & empty.
I see many people unsatisfied with the ending. While I wish things were tied up neatly, I'll give a very basic interpretation to try and resolve its thematic incompleteness. It won't be perfect. I haven't read tsubasa chronicle. This isn't for die hard fans. SPOILERS AHEAD.
There's this idea of individualism with a constant reminder of choice and happiness. Clients will choose things that bring dissatisfaction in their life, and Yuuko will not dissuade them from choosing their ultimate wish, even if it's destructive. Watanuki is left with the only gift Yuuko is capable of giving: hope. This hope comes from Watanuki's free will and desire. He has constructed his own purpose. However, no choice a person makes is innocent. Watanuki does not regret his choice, even if it brings unhappiness. it's up to the reader to decide how destructive it was.
Whatever you think of his choice, this hope will get him through what is inevitable. I believe that is why the egg hasn't been used yet. Erasing his memories will mean erasing Watanuki's personal purpose. This is also why he continues to wait in the shop. I think until Watanuki is able to have purpose outside of Yuuko, the egg will never be used. Personally, I think it's okay to live for someone. You might think otherwise.
Concerning the personality shift, maybe the departure of Yuuko left an emptiness in Watanuki. In an attempt to fulfil that space, his mind decided to take on her role and her habits. I do wish it was a little more subtle but I got the message.
Yuuko's worldview of hitsuzen means every choice made is significant, and will have its impact down the line. There might be a bigger reason for Watanuki's choice to stay at the shop. Maybe xxxHolic Rei intends to show that but I doubt we'll get a proper conclusion. I don’t think xxxHolic was perfect but it gave me a new worldview. For now, I'll be satisfied with the significance of making a personal purpose in a world of destiny.
This manga had a huge impact on shaping my sense of self as a child. as an adult I'm really able to appreciate it. it's a truly bittersweet series - poignant in all the right ways. It's ultimately a show about human desires and human connection, moving on and letting go. must read in my opinion
Very good. Remembered reading this as a young teen and didn't really understand it. Its got a log going on and you have to be a bit more mature to understand the subtleties of the writing and the problems of the characters. The ending was cool though, but I didn't really understand it and was kind of sad :(
