Honestly all I could is goddamn in awe
so so so sad but unbelievably beautiful. genuinely changed my life a little bit
this was great but i’ll never read it again lol
holy shit?? Genuinely amazing but I think I’d rather die than read it again.
incredible portrayal of intergenerational trauma and how deeply your parents affect you. That said, not entirely sure what I'm feeling right now after finishing it. Not particularly sad, not really content either. Just feeling strange.

genuinely one of the most viscerally unsettling manga i've ever read. incredible. the hollow ache in this manga's aftermath... i feel scooped out.
there's something so elegant about the simplicity of the panelling and layouts. slows you down and draws your focus to single elements and feelings and makes you sit in those feelings. going to an action or dialogue-heavy manga after this might give you whiplash.
with that said, this is not a slow manga. the pacing is thrilling. there's this building unease from the very beginning, like everything is fine, but not quite, that skilfully creates anticipation. the flashes of the dead cat creeping in just when you think things are good. then she pushes shigeru, and the thrill truly begins. a masterclass in emotional manipulation, gas lighting, terror, mental instability and warped familial relationships. the cycles of abuse and neglect and all their ripples... it's so oppressive-- the way the story's biggest villain is supposed to be the presence that brings you the most love, and comfort. you can't run back to mommy when mommy's the reason you want to run away. why would you even want to run away--thats mommy!
oshimi understands the power of a single image and uses it to devastating effect. he'll show a twisted expression that pulls at something primal in you that recognizes it as wrong, then dip into the surreal and blatantly uncanny to peel back reality entirely. but that surrealism is a tool to show us ourselves, to convey the darkest, ugliest parts of humans, amplify them, but never exaggerate to complete unreality. people are like this. look at it. look at what we can be. it's so morbidly fascinating and sickening you can't look away.
it's the way seiko twists truth around itself, even when she's not there, and seichi wonders if he's just blaming his mother because he's a coward who wants to stay pure and innocent while his sweet, miserable mother suffers alone...the insidious way she's ruined everything around her because she has nothing to live for inside of her... the way she rips up the confession letter, calls seichi dirty, self-harms so seichi feels guilty, its so so disgusting!
mommy's final betrayal...jesus. like i had no faith in her but it still cracks you open when she denounces ever having a child. you feel exactly like seichi in that courtroom. mommy? mommy where are you going? mommy, why did you make me kill him? this is your fault. or is it my fault? mommy i HATE YOU! mommy, fix me. i did it for you...
the final chapters were excruciating. they make you sit with the discomfort of caring for an old sickly relative, with the caveat that this is the person that ruined your entire life. this is the reason you cannot live. and they're just a regular, decrepit human. and you understand. you don't forgive them, but you understand what drove them. and when they finally die, maybe you're free, but your life is the same life it's always been and going to be.
at least at the end there was peace.
"die, just die!"
"hahah how awful, someone like you can't possibly be mine, can they?"
and they're smiling because they both understand.
it is kind of misery porn, but where blood on the tracks succeeds and something like 'boy's abyss' fails is in its emotional depth and ability to affect you. 'boy's abyss' was melodramatic, unfocused, and kind of entertaining. 'blood on the tracks' was horrifying and real and truly haunting. Rarely does manga feel so vulnerable and achingly human than in Oshimi’s hands.
really disturbing but very well written
How far can a mother’s love go turns into a sickly obsession. A story about generational trauma and mental illness.
