This was pretty good—like a solid three, bordering on four stars—until the third chapter, where it just nosedived in quality.
I liked the start. The story opens with Howe and Torao being introduced to each other as children, and instantly, they believe each other to be fated partners. But when they do their secondary gender test ten years later, it all comes crumbling down when it's revealed that both are alphas. Torao breaks up with Howe and tells him he should act as expected of an alpha—the opposite of his sweet, bubbly nature.
The dynamic at the start was quite fun. Howe seems to secretly really resent the way Torao treats him now, which made him become quite jaded. After Torao makes another offhand comment about how he should "act like an alpha," Howe brings a woman home for a one-night stand. Torao, being Howe's neighbor, is able to hear the whole thing, and when he questions Howe about it the next day, he's outraged at finding out that Howe and that woman weren't dating and he was just using her for her body. Seeing how mad he got, Howe comes onto him, and from there they start to have a physical relationship.
I really liked this. I felt them simply coming together repeatedly the way they were was quite naturally building up their relationship—they broke up those years ago because Torao didn't think alphas could be together, and now each time they had sex, it got sweeter, it got more romantic, it was like they were slowly letting go of the hang-ups they had.
And then chapter three happens.
When a girl invites Howe out to watch a movie with her, Howe lies and says that he actually planned on watching the movie with Torao. But the girl doesn't mind, and suggests all four of them (her, her own friend, and then also Howe and Torao) all go together. Howe was going to turn it down, but Torao answered for him first and agreed. And then once they're at the cinema, Torao makes it so that Howe's sitting next to the woman who asked him out.
It's obvious that Torao is trying to push the two of them together, and it's frustrating Howe. Howe drags him into the theater's bathroom and demands to know what's going on. And Torao comes clean; he says that he's "not normal," that despite being an alpha, he still wants to be pushed down by another man. But Howe is "different" from him; he can have an omega partner and be happy, and Torao feels guilty for not turning him away when they first had sex.
Despite what he's saying being pretty obviously a confession of his feelings—especially considering their history and all they've shared so far, it's a blatant example of someone pushing away the person they love because they feel unworthy of such affection—Howe takes it instead to mean that Torao doesn't actually like him and he's just desperate for any man to fuck him. And so, frustrated and angry and upset, Howe fucks Torao in one of the stalls one last time. He's rough and cruel, essentially just using him to vent out his own frustrations with the situation.
It's just such an ugly scene. By this time in the story, I had come to quite like both characters and the relationship they had, so a scene like this that's outright just mean-spirited left an incredibly sour taste in my mouth. And Howe coming to the conclusion he came to—and Torao just completely refusing to explain himself not just in the moment but also in later chapters when the two of them were alone, including a scene where Howe outright explains the way he took what Torao said—was so fucking stupid. I hated it. This forced, contrived conflict ended up weighing the story down so much that I'd say I don't even like this story anymore.
But to end on a good note, at least the art's nice. Maybe the mangaka should stick to art and hire a writer.
BWAHSHAHSHA I GET OVER IT AND STARTED LIKING IT
