It's okay. He's a doctor dedicated to his work, so much so he's been engaged for eight years to a sophisticated, and snobbish, socialite. Then he meets this girl whose life revolves around antiques. From there, he's drawn to her, but remains determined to stick to his original plan. Then he catches fiancee with another man, has a constipated epiphany, hunts down his antique dealer. It's the sixties, so conservative traditionalists abound...
She's the daughter of an old family with the big country house, the mannerisms, but are damn near broke which lead to her engagement to a financier from the city. He's the new doctor in the village and he knows something about her fiance and is attracted to her, but unsure how to pass on his information without excessive drama. Luckily, the little shit exposes himself and the Lady and the Doctor can begin.
Well, he's not mean or misogynistic, but he does like to have things go to his way, and I don't know if she's just too polite, too tired, too both.... I mean, she calls him out on his behaviour, but goes along with him anyway. That must be what she wants in her life, because she doesn't seem truly unhappy with it, almost as if she's curious how far he can go with it. It's cute, with a little horror thrown in... (The underage stalker.)
She's a woman who has been verbally and emotionally abused all her life so she can't believe anyone would want or love her. He courts her slowly, eventually allowing her to open up, but her stepmother and sister keep poking at her. At the end, he confronts the evil pair, gives her her childhood home as a wedding gift and the evil steps are the only two killed when their ferry sinks on its way to France. (That's a last bit is a lie, but it sounds good.)
This is a sweet, with very little in the way of drama, incredibly slow burning tale. She used to live in the mansion with her elderly aunts, but a bad investment had them having to move out and rent the big house out. In order to make some extra money, she decides to undertake work her old house and meets the good doctor. He's kind, hardworking and cares for his employees and she beings to harbor feelings for him, and he for her, so start dancing around the bush...round and round...
Okay, so yea, he's dancing around a bush, but during an investigation, it isn't always wise to inform the target they're being investigated, especially with how softhearted this girl is... I mean, she'd probably have said, 'but they are my family'. (Sentiment, the straight jacket of many.) So, as he's compiling evidence, he dances around that bush until he has enough to go rescue his distressed damsel. It's old fashioned, slow, but sweet in the end.
Hmm, it's very repressed between the adults, but the little girl is cute and bubbly and her demise is quite depressing, especially when it's discovered the reason behind her condition. It's a sad but sweet little story.
It's sweet. Country girl and the big city doctor. He takes his time and is very gentlemanly, but she needed a touch of grief counseling, losing her parents and then losing her aunt, she's feeling the loneliness deeply. Still, sweetie, giving two shits about what other people think is a waste of time, opinions and assholes and all. Over all, though, they are sweet together and it's a nice little story.
