this josei melodrama romance masterpiece comes to mind first.
Honestly such a good read I can't even. Maybe the straights do deserve rights idfk. A woman in her 30s goes on a trip and ends up pretending to be married to grab the interest of a handsome man she met on the plane. However he's in on the "affair" for his own reasons. Super romantic and it poses many questions about modern day marriage, tradition, love and fidelity.
this is the manga that made me go "huh... I guess a bunch of good writers make reference to this story" Super sweet and melancholic story about an older man reflecting on his last breakup, falling into a depression, and his evolving relationship with his boss and a hs student who helps him at the train station. Very beautiful. I squealed y'all. Also there's a trans person maybe???? Not sure. They call them LGBT and the pronouns are mixed.
pretty straight forward scene in this one reimagining being on the galactic railroad train with a bunch of cat people. Told ya only stories that are weirdly *deep* do this reference. Apparently even Over The Garden Wall has a reference to it
shit have not read this yet - description to be added lol
(BTW because english publishers suck, this has a translated release in Spanish! fml)
the main character works on a theater play early on about NOTGR.
This story gives Skip Beat vibes, but I'm not saying it's a rip off in any way. It has its own character.
Unfortunately it was dropped because the manga's writer (not author/artist) is a pedo who went to prison. This is why we can't have nice things. I guess they were not as famous as Watsuki Nobuhiro lol what is life.

I thought I'd mention also one of my personal favorite anime shows Mawaru Penguindrum also makes a reference to NOTGL.
Which makes a lot of sense since that show is also full of surrealist and symbolic moments (symbolic more like the art movement than the usual term)
