This story is ongoing, but what's there is really interesting so far! Plenty of guideverse stories contain commentary on the military but I have yet to read one that's so scathingly critical of it, or that leans into the action feeling realistic rather than fantastic. The ML is refreshingly deeply flawed & traumatized, and the ML & plot detriment show promise as well.
This is a Guideverse story has pretty good smut, but where it really shines is its dialogue and characterization. I like that the MC is very down to earth about his struggles with life as a celebrity Esper with trust issues, and he feels very human, and the ML is interesting and caring, with his own complex past. It's refreshing having the Esper as the uke, especially bc the author really thoughtfully & deeply explores how his powers effect his life.
This us for anyone who wants a romcom Guideverse story with a focus more on slowburn relationship development & office politic dreams than action, tho there is some. I really love the take-no-shit MC (tho his insecurity is a lil overdone), & his romance with the obsessive ML feels complex & human, he doesn't just ignore the ML's flaws or abandon his own convictions. Also love that the cheating ex is never ever forgiven by the MC or the narrative.
The art may be a little clunky in places, but besides that wow I didn't expect to like this action-packed, psychological intrigue-filled dramcom series this much! The worldbuilding somehow manages to combine a bunch of very different tropes together in a unique combo that somehow works, and the way it portrays powers feels a lot more interesting and detailed than your typical guideverse setting. Legit don't know where it's going but want to see more.
Slice-of-life, worldbuilding, & slowburn romance. The MC may first appear to be an ordinary innocent uke, but he's refreshingly nuanced, while the ML feels more 3D & human than most obsessive calculating semes even tho he's a little closer to the stereotype. Has some interesting plot twists and fun side characters too.
This one is a rec bc of how fucked up it is - may seem like ur typical rapey smut, but it's got unexpected layers of psychological angst & existential eldritch horror even under that. The uke MC has a spine despite his circumstances, & the story really conveys a feeling of the trauma of living in a hyper-controlling military state during a decades-long slowburn apocalypse. You really get the feeling everyone's coping badly with how shit their dying world is.
Besides the MC being a little bland and the art a little stiff sometimes, this story has enough interesting points on terms of the mysterious sly-fox ML, his quirky ragtag guild members and the exploration of the Guideverse world's criminal underground.
This one is kinda a low rec, but still a rec bc of the dramatic & twisty plot. The art is stiff and the characters/romance aren't the most compelling ever, but the story was engaging and mysterious and made me want to keep reading. In the end, I enjoyed it well enough and am glad I finished it. A good read for lovers of intrigue and mystery!
This is another odd quasi-rec where it's not over the top great, but the story is just interesting enough that every time I think it's getting dull it hooks me back in, which takes some skill. I especially enjoy the slice of life world-building & slow unfurling of the ML's issues and trauma.
