He realizes the kid has a crush on the gym teacher (and his old HS classmate). He spilled his secret since he needed the ml’s help to pull out the kid from hiding—or so he thought. There is more to the story. This is very “don’t judge a book” and “don’t jump to conclusions”.
Tragic but thankfully the added two chapters gave a pull from despair ending.
