I think because she permanently had the body of a 15 year old, Steph was surprised that the young girl was Shuku's mother. So I assume that's Shuku as a child next to her in the photograph. As for the rest, no idea.

All I understand is that Shuku's dad was pure blood while his mom was human, and that Stephen became vampire to atone for killing his protector by living 500 years. And that Stephen made a deal with Shuku to kill Stephen in front of the villagers so he'd be accepted into the village. And that Shuku wants to leave with Stephen. I'm guessing that's all that really matters, but I feel like I'm missing a big chunk here.
