(I'm black too but that doesn't really matter considering we DO have a lot of selfhating people in our communtiy) it has something to do with the fetishization of brown men and pale women; They like the men to look more rough and dominating and for some reason they equate that with darkskin tone- the same goes for the pale women accept they like women to be more soft and submissive looking so they (some reason) equate those characteristics with pale/white skin tone which is crazy but whatever I guess. No worries though I used to wonder the same thing before I looked more into it
It's not so crazy it has to due more with traditions and beliefs (beauty standards). It is ridiculous, though, LOL.
For example, sometimes I complained about how "white" my legs were* (I'm mestiza, BTW, so my skin is a yellowish white and I can tan), and my mom nagged at me saying that's what was consider beautiful when she was young (20-50 years ago). Women avoided getting tanned and even bathed in milk, they wanted to have a "porcelain skin" which was consider beautiful back then.
So some years ago it was pretty to have your skin white in my region, 10-15 years ago it was tanned and now people likes both(?), don't know. I think it depends on classes (status) too, I'm betting a high class girl, whose family might be related to European (Caucasian), takes care of her white skin more than other mestizos, moreover when they just get sunburned and don't tan.
Of course this conception of beauty is related to what you wrote: "they like women to be more soft and submissive looking". I must add "delicate", delicate as a porcelain.

Darker skinned men with lighter skinned women is more like this sort of appealing "taboo", and men with darker skin are seen to be more masculine while men with paler, "porcelain" skin to be more feminine (which is a problem. A huge one).
As a girl, to be dark skinned can be quite difficult in a social standard, because women with lighter skin are equated to beauty-- and that is seen all around the world, especially in countries like India, where bleaching is the norm. It sucks, but that is the consequence of eurocentric beauty standards.
I'm a lightskin black girl and I vouch this, colorism is shit. I just...ugh I can't even I talk about this stuff so much on tumblr
