I do feel like the Uke should have gone with the mother at least until both of them could live together. The uke was making his decisions based mostly on his father because the idiotic mother told him so when he was little. Given how they were talking how little decision power they had as they are essentially children, I thought maybe the mother was going to act like a mother and take him away from that abusive place.
