That open ending was both unnecessary and unearned author #－.－). The story was already confusing as balls, the least you could do was tell us "they lived happily ever after".

For those confused, the ending implies that Reeve might've survived the soul cutting, not Hawthorne. So the poor guy, after living like a shadow his whole life, might be dead.
