Shinji doesn't like violence. That's just his nature there's nothing he can do about it. I think he believes choosing violence even as self-defence would make him like his dad.

I mean cant you just instead be the one to beat the shit out of your dad? My father is also abusive but i manage to get myself to punch him for the first time when i was 12 of course at first i was the one beaten but i worked out without them knowing then one day when it was obvious he wants to vent his anger I striked first to the point it ended with him having his skull almost cracked open when i was 15. of course im not a violent person most people even consider me feminine but i wont ever let anyone just abuse me cause i seem weak.
