maybe it depends on the location but my male friends and brother pretty much knows what yaoi is, and never fails to tease us girls whenever we are into something that remotely looks like yaoi (like an otome game or something). everyone in my clique is casual about it.
anime is pretty mainstream in the philippines anyway so i guess that contributes to it?
I run into yaoi about 2 years, but anime-manga in dragon ball, slam dunk, ranma 1/2, cardcaptor sakura period
And in my mayor with 320 people and about 130 girls, not even one person who like at least know what yaoi is, except me. And the boys who describe them self as otaku thinks yaoi is " the another hentai who not allow to be known"
I never have anyone can shared the story and exchange about update, in my first language
