    It comes down to culture. Jiejie is a chinese term meaning "older sister", but the thing is that it's used by younger man towards older women in general, regardless whether they are blood related or not.

    This is common in several other asian cultures as well. Where a younger guy addresses an older woman as "Noona". Or in the Philippines where younger people address an older woman as "Ate".

    In english it definitely might sound odd, due to the differences in cultures. Since the term "sister" is mainly used between blood relatives.
