I can understand how some people might find the semes a bit cold but they really aren't. If you read the atmosphere and notice the way they look at the ukes you can clearly see the affection and attraction. Not everyone is openly affectionate so it's nice to see characters were they have to be prodded a bit and reminded that their ukes can't read their minds. It's a much better character flaw for the mangaka to write in than them being abusive or neglectful.
