Well, it's not that it wasn't his true character. That darkness was already there in the first place, it was just amplified by the poison.
That felt so forced. That certain part was applied to somehow clean the ML's reputation and his redemption becomes acceptable but it's executed poorly. Really, it doesn't do much.
