They often use a condom to finger to keep hands clean. If you read up on anal sex, it's also recommended to put condoms on your toys as well to make sure they stay hygienic. It's purely a hygiene thing.
like the other said its hygienic and a condom is at least also a little lubericaded so it can also help whit that :)

It's easier for a condom to stay lubricated than fingers. Friction can cause absorbtion with skin. Also it can protect the inside from nails which can scrape and irritate. Those are the main reasons.
If the inside hasn't been cleaned thouroughly, then it's about hygiene too. But if it's clean, there's no other reason than protection and lubrication to use one.
