I think it was mostly his mother who was responsible (hence the ML locking her up), since if her son DID die, the king could just legitimize his bastard son, Raven, thus continuing HIS line.
But she wanted to avoid that perceived insult to her, and treated her son as a prize stud instead of as her child. ┑(￣Д ￣)┍

i have the suspicion that Blanche's mom actually raped the king, and now he is heavily traumatized which is why he acts the way he does, If it is true I hope the story shows his healing
