They're just evil buddy, she's a commoner with no background or powerful backing attached her, a disposable pawn for leabric to use so that they can gain even more power while putting on a farce that everythings okay (they don't want people to know of Veronica was poisoned) it was easy to use some commoner with barely a background to replace Veronica... is why they tried to kill her parents immediately cause if in anyway she went back to them, they might talk and more commoners and even nobles will hear of their deeds. Basically yeah she didn't do anything to them to deserve it but they don't even look at her like she's a person..
