Um, he was no where near the accident, so it still would have happened. And he got engaged 3 months before the FL showed up again, so nearly 4 years after the accident. But you got everything else right.

If he really was in love with her, the events ater the accident would not have happened at all. He got engaged immediately, didn't bother about her existence for 4 years, and might have been forever if she didn't come back to France.... and he wouldn't get back to her if he didn't find out he had a son. Telling her he still loves her is really stretching it , and tbh, she shouldn't have readily accepted him.
