They're currently in middle school. 2nd day of high school, Jian Yi disappears. When Xixi is in college, Jian Yi comes back, but he has to to complete high school, so he can't go to college with Xixi.
So basically, this is all a flashback, the present is when Xixi is in college and Jian Yi is finishing high school
