Yeah, that’s what I thought too. Remember when he couldn’t sleep cause of bad dreams? I’m sure those dreams were of the past, when she died in front of him. Also, when he asked why she doesn’t feel anything when saying goodbye after her cousins left. He had on a serious expression and tells her that he won’t leave her. He definitely fell in love with her and used magic to go back to the past and save her. His uncle, the crazy magician, is probably the one that did the spell and the reason he’s searching for him in this new life in order to learn magic. I’m kind of curious if he did meet the novel’s heroine before going back to the past. Like when the FL mentioned dark haired priest who be a good match for him. He didn’t seem interested or showed any reaction.
Oh and we can't forget the way he stared at her mother's painting coz the painting looked like the grown up fl and he also said the fl looked like someone he miss

I believe the ML was devastated in the past life and got in contact with that mage duke or soemthing and bam he’s back in the past trying to fix everything.
Evidence supporting this:
When FL saw him she was surprised because in her memories he was then type of boy craving for affection while the current boy is calm af and hella nice???
Secondly he suddenly wanted to become a mage. Based off the FL’s reaction we can infer that this was not the path he chose.
